What Is The Reason Why You Want To Serve God?

Why do you fear or serve God? Do you serve Him for nothing? Service is an important aspect of a believing Christian's walk with God. The scriptures teach us to serve God, but the question is, "what is the main motive behind the service?" The true answer to this question determines how God will respond to your service.

Then the Lord said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?" So Satan answered the Lord and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!" And the Lord said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person." - Job 1:8-12 (NKJV)

The challenge

There are great blessings attached to service unto God. For instance, Exodus 23:25-26 promise you provision, sickness-free life, fruitfulness and longevity when you serve God. However, many Christians have zeroed down to merely serving God for things. When they pray, teach or preach the word of God, praise and worship God, they are only concerned for what they will get at the end of it. It has become a show to God.
Unfortunately, when they don't quickly get these things, they switch off, saying, "this thing doesn't work"- referring to Christianity. They call the scriptures lies, words written just to deceive people. They turn around and tell people not to believe in that "Jesus Christ stuff". Yet, they were the ones who got it all wrong from the beginning and fell into the devil's deception.

Case Study

Let's consider Job's story. God's testimony of him amazes me any time I read it. I strongly desire that one day the Lord will testify of me as He did Job.
In Job 1:6-12, when the sons of God gathered, the enemy also gathered. God asked where he was coming from. And he answered, "From going to and fro on the earth". Then God asked him if he had considered His servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth; that he is a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and hates evil. The devil answered God that Job does not fear God for nothing, that God had given him all round protection and prosperity. He asked God to allow him to strike Job and He will discover that Job would curse God. And God allowed him but warned him not to touch Job.

Remain In Service, Be Paid And Promoted

Are you still in service unto God? Every service unto the Lord attracts a reward, for God is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him. God owes no man anything but richly gives us all things to enjoy. However, to qualify for God’s blessings you have to be actively in service. This post emphasizes the need to diligently serve God in order to receive his blessings.

So you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you. No one shall suffer miscarriage or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days – Exodus 23:25-26 (NKJV).

‘His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord – Matthew 25:21 (NKJV).

I recently heard Dr David Oyedepo saying that you need to remain in service to be paid and promoted, and I was prompted in my spirit to write on this.

Nobody gets paid by an organization if the person is not on their payroll. You have to be a staff working in that organization for you to be entitled for any payment at the end of the week or month. So also, you have to be actively servicing God to be qualified for His blessings.

In Exodus 23:25, God listed the blessings that will come upon anyone who is serving Him. This list covers everything you will ever desire on earth: prosperity, total health, fruitfulness and long life. Also, Matthew 25:21 makes it clear that when you faithfully serve God, you will be greatly promoted.

This year, God is very much ready to release His blessings to you, but you have to be in active service. Therefore, allow the Father to lead you in what areas He wants you to serve Him and do so, and your joy shall be full.

When you quit serving the Lord, you cease to be on His payroll, and there will be no further promotions for you. Many Christians excitedly serve the Lord, but when God blesses them with their heart desires, they quit serving Him. Unfortunately, this step of theirs disqualifies them for future pay and promotions, until they return to serving Him. Read more...

How To Qualify For God’s Reward

Many are working for God but seem not to be getting any rewards, what could be the problem? Acceptable service unto God always attracts rewards from God. God owes no man but handsomely rewards anyone who qualifies for it. This post gives a summary of how to obtain God's reward.

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him - Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV)

Do not look upon me, because I am dark, because the sun has tanned me. My mother's sons were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards, But my own vineyard I have not kept - Song of Solomon 1:6 (NKJV)

'These people draw near to Me with their mouth, and honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me - Matthew 15:8 (NKJV)

It's one thing to qualify for a reward in the sight of men and another to qualify before the Lord. God, who is the rewarder, knows those who are due for rewards at any point in time; and when your cloud is full, surely your showers of blessing will pour down.

How to obtain God's reward for serving Him
  1. Do it rightly and acceptably
God rewards you for doing things according to His word and purpose, not according to your own way. When Uzzah tried to steady the ark when the oxen stumbled, God struck him and he died - 2 Samuel 6:6-7. He did a good thing but not the right thing; it was not acceptable before God. Also the lady in Song of Solomon 1:6 was working but not her own work. The work that would fetch her rewards she left undone. There is no pay for unassigned work done.
  1. Do it joyfully
Serve God with joy and gladness of heart; otherwise, instead of rewards you will get sorrows and losses - Deuteronomy 28:47. God loves cheerful givers - 2 Corinthians 9:7. Give your service with joy and cheerfulness and it will be acceptable before God.
  1. Serve with all your heart
God's reward is for those who serve Him with their heart. Man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart - 1 Samuel 16:7. God knows if your heart is not in what you are doing (Matthew 15:8); man may reward you for it but not God. And God's rewards are far better than man's rewards. Read more...
