He is one who feeds, tends, protects and leads flocks of sheep. And he stays with the sheep day and night and the sheep go where he goes. Also, the sheep know their shepherd's voice and will not follow another.

Good Shepherd

However, there are good and bad shepherds. And the bad ones are the hirelings, who don't care about the sheep and flee when there's danger. However, a good shepherd will give his life for the sheep.
